Today, 18th August 2026, would have been Paul Johnson birthday memoriam. Paul was born in Swansea on 18th August 1976, and in the years that followed he became something quite remarkable. A blind fundraiser and radio presenter whose presence in this city left a mark that his family, and many others, still feel clearly.

His mother has placed this tribute in the Swansea Evening Post today because some birthdays demand to be marked, even when, especially when, the person at the centre of them is no longer here to celebrate. A fiftieth birthday. Half a century. It is a milestone that deserves more than silence.

This tribute has been published in the South Wales in memoriam notices, where Swansea gathers to remember those it has loved and lost.

A Blind Fundraiser and Radio Presenter: Paul’s Own Achievement

The two descriptions placed beside Paul’s name in this notice, blind fundraiser and radio presenter, are not titles handed to him. They are things he earned, and things he chose.

To fundraise is to give your time and energy to something beyond yourself. To do it while navigating the world without sight is to do it with an additional layer of commitment and courage that most people will never fully appreciate. Paul did it anyway. He raised money. He made a difference. He showed up.

And then there was radio. The medium of voice, where what you hear is all there is, where a presenter’s warmth and wit and personality are the entire product. Paul had all of those. A radio presenter in Swansea, speaking to the city he lived in, giving people something to listen to and something to feel.

Together, those two roles paint the picture of a man who was generous with himself, who used whatever platform he had to contribute, and who did so in ways that many able-bodied people simply never find the energy or the will to match.

His Mam’s Words: The Heart of This Tribute

His mother’s tribute is brief and complete. It does not need to be long. It needs only to be true, and it is:

Happy 50th heavenly birthday

I miss you so much

Your laughter, your smile, your kisses, your touch.

Sleep well, my angel in heaven above.

Missing you always and sending you love.

The things she misses- laughter, smile, kisses, touch- are not abstract. They are physical, specific, sensory. They are the things that belong to a person in the room, the person you could reach out and hold. She misses the embodied reality of her son. That is grief in its most honest form, and it does not diminish with birthdays.

‘Your Broken-Hearted Mam’

She signs the tribute: your broken-hearted Mam. Not just sad. Not just missing him. Broken-hearted. The word is chosen because it is accurate.

A mother who loses a child carries something that does not have a proper name in English. Widow, widower, orphan- the language has words for those losses. For a parent who outlives their child, the word does not exist, because the loss is considered too complete to reduce to a label. Paul’s Mam knows that loss. She has lived inside it for however long it has been since he left.

And still she comes back, every year, to say his name in public. To mark his birthday. To make sure Swansea knows he existed, that he mattered, that he is remembered.

Paul Johnson birthday memoriam: Happy 50th, From All of Us

Paul Johnson was a fundraiser, a radio presenter, a son, and a Swansea man whose life deserved more years than it received. Today, on the Swansea birthday tributes section of the South Wales Evening Post, his mother marks the day with love. The only thing left to give, and still the most powerful thing there is.

Happy 50th heavenly birthday, Paul. Swansea remembers you.
