Valerie (Val) Lloyd Obituary, former Welsh Labour Assembly Member for Swansea East, has died aged 82 following a long illness. Born in Swansea on 16 November 1943, she passed away at her London home on 21 May 2026 surrounded by her family.

Val Lloyd represented Swansea East in the National Assembly for Wales from 2001 until 2011 and became one of the most recognizable political figures associated with the constituency. She is survived by her husband Robert Lloyd and daughters Samantha and Rebecca.

Her passing has been published in the Swansea Evening Post death notices,  where Swansea honours those who shaped its community and its history.

Assembly Member for Swansea East, A Decade of Public Service

Val Lloyd was elected to the National Assembly for Wales in the 2001 Swansea East by-election, following the death of her predecessor Val Feld. She won with 58 per cent of the vote, a decisive mandate from a constituency she knew intimately, having been born and raised in the Townhill area of Swansea.

She had already served as a City and County of Swansea Councillor for Morriston ward since May 1999. And notably, her husband Bob Lloyd served as Lord Mayor from 1999 to 2000, marking the first occasion in Swansea’s history where both the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress were serving councillors simultaneously.

Her time at the Assembly ran until May 2011, when she was succeeded by Mike Hedges. In those ten years, Val brought her deep roots in Swansea’s working communities to the chamber of Wales’s newly devolved parliament, a parliament she was part of at its most formative stage.

Early Life and Education

Born in the Townhill area of Swansea on 16 November 1943, Val Lloyd remained deeply connected to the city throughout her life. She attended Swansea High School for Girls before studying at Swansea University, institutions that helped shape her commitment to public service and community involvement.

Born in Townhill and educated locally, she carried Swansea with her throughout a career that eventually took her to London in later years. The fact that her family has announced a celebration of her life to be held in Swansea later in the year is testament to where her heart always remained.

Beloved Wife, Loving Mother

Away from politics, Val was above all else a devoted family woman. She was the beloved wife of Robert Lloyd, formerly Bob Lloyd, the man who served as Swansea’s Lord Mayor at the turn of the millennium, and the loving mother of Samantha and Rebecca.

For her daughters and her husband, this loss is not that of a public figure but of the woman at the centre of their world. Her family’s decision to hold a private funeral in London, followed by a public celebration of life in Swansea, speaks to a life that belonged equally to the public and the personal.

A Legacy of Service to Wales and Swansea

Val Lloyd’s public career placed her at a genuinely historic moment in Welsh life. The National Assembly for Wales now the Senedd, was a new institution when she was elected, and those who served in its early years helped define the culture, conduct, and credibility of Welsh democracy.

She brought to that role the groundedness of someone who had spent decades in her community, not as a career politician, but as a public servant in the truest sense of the phrase.

Tributes to Val Lloyd

Following news of her death, tributes have been shared by former colleagues, community leaders and residents across Swansea. Many remembered Val Lloyd as a dedicated public servant whose work helped shape the early years of Welsh democracy and strengthened representation for Swansea East.
