The Swansea Evening Post shares with great sadness Barbara Demaid of Swansea obituary, who departed this life peacefully on 21 March 2026. Born in 1942, Barbara lived a life defined by community, character, and an open-hearted generosity that touched everyone who crossed her path. Hers was a presence that once known, was never forgotten.

Barbara was no ordinary woman. As the former landlady of two of the area’s most cherished local pubs — The Rock & Fountain and The Three Compasses — she was a familiar and beloved figure across Swansea and the surrounding South Wales communities. Behind every great local pub is someone who makes it feel like home; for countless regulars, that someone was Barbara.

This Swansea death notice is published with the full support of the Demaid family, so that all who knew Barbara — whether as a neighbour in Clydach, a familiar face behind the bar, or a beloved member of their own family — may have the opportunity to pay their respects.

The Heart of a Family

Mother, Nan, Partner, and Sister

At the very core of Barbara’s life was her family — the people for whom she gave everything, and from whom she drew endless joy and purpose. She was the devoted mother of Wendy and the late Paul and Michaela, carrying the memory of those she lost with quiet strength while continuing to pour love into those who remained. She was also a dear mother-in-law to Neil and the late Graham, welcoming into her circle with the same warmth she gave to everyone she held dear.

To her grandchildren — Craig, Liam, and Lewis — she was their loving Nan: the kind of grandmother whose kitchen always smelled right, whose voice always steadied the room, and whose love was as certain as the ground beneath their feet. And as great grandmother to Lilliana, Oskar, Aria, Hudson, and Harlan, she gave the youngest members of the family a gift beyond measure — the memory of someone who loved them completely, from the very beginning.

Barbara was also the much loved partner of Ronnie, a relationship that brought companionship and joy to her later years. And she was a dearly loved sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and great aunt — one of those people who held the wider family together with ease, whose presence at every gathering was simply assumed, and whose absence will be felt in a way that no words can fully capture.

The Rock & Fountain and The Three Compasses

Barbara Behind the Bar

In the South Wales communities she served, Barbara Demaid was as much a part of the local fabric as the streets themselves. As landlady of The Rock & Fountain and later The Three Compasses, she created spaces where people felt welcome, where strangers became regulars and regulars became friends. Running a pub is about far more than pulling pints — it is about reading people, building community, and making a place feel like it belongs to everyone. Barbara did all of that effortlessly.

For those who knew her through those years, Barbara was the first face they saw when they came in and the last one they thought of when they left. That is a rare quality, and one that will live long in the memories of everyone who raised a glass in her pubs across Swansea and the wider South Wales area.

Remembering Barbara Demaid of Clydach, Swansea

Some people leave a room when they walk out of it. Others leave it changed — warmer, fuller, more alive for having had them in it. Barbara Demaid was firmly in that second group.

From the bustling bars of The Rock & Fountain and The Three Compasses to the quiet evenings in Clydach surrounded by her family, Barbara carried the same quality throughout her life: an instinctive ability to make people feel that they mattered, that they were welcome, that they were seen.

She was a mother who endured loss and loved harder for it. She was a Nan who made grandchildren feel like the centre of the universe. She was a partner, a sister, an aunt — and in every role she played, she was fully, unreservedly present.

The Swansea Evening Post extends its deepest condolences to Ronnie, Wendy, Neil, Craig, Liam, Lewis, and the entire Demaid family. To little Lilliana, Oskar, Aria, Hudson, and Harlan — your great grandmother was someone very special indeed.
